Join Us – The Garden As Inspiration CREATE Series  The Winter Session Garden As Inspiration Art Class will be focused on Still Life Techniques using Drawing, Watercolor, and Collage.  Still life is a classic genre and a traditional way to build your artist eye and use of materials. The term “still life” describes a work of art that shows inanimate objects from the natural or man-made world, such as fruit, flowers, dead game, and/or vessels like baskets or bowls.

We will view and discuss the Still Life Art Work of Giorgio Morandi, Cezzane, Monet and other Artist to gain insight and inspiration for our own work in the Still Life Genre.

Maria Mariottini will teach the class which will be a 6 week long series that explores forms and textures found in still life artwork. Maria Mariottini has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and a Master in Educating Adults from DePaul. She produced the Bucktown Arts Fest for 20 years and still serves as a juror. She is committed to the value of arts and community.

CLASS SYLLABUS – Still Life Using Drawing, Watercolor & Mixed Media

• 2 weeks using PENCILS – February 6 & 13
• 2 weeks using WATERCOLOR – February 20 & 27
• 2 weeks using COLLAGE & MIXED MEDIA – March 6 & 13

NOTE: This can also be treated as an Additive technique/medium series – you can incorporate the previous focus in the new focus – eg. you can use pencils + water color in the 3rd and 4th weeks.

THE CLASS LAYOUT – 90 Minute class

• 30 minutes – View the work of 1-2 Still Life Artists per week.
• 45 min create and finish work in the style of the Artist we studied – but, make it your own
• 15 minutes-All Students discuss their artworks to share ideas and insight.

SUPPLY LIST Still Life with Pencil Drawing – Weeks 1 & 2

• A blank notebook of drawing paper approximately 8in X 12in
• Mixed Media Paper can be used for the drawing, watercolor & collage/mixed media sections of this class
• A Set of PENCILS from Soft to Hard
• A Set of Colored pencils
• Eraser and a Pencil Sharpener

SUPPLY LIST Still Life with Watercolor – Weeks 3 & 4

• Your Drawing Supplies from Week 1 & 2
• A block of watercolor paper approximately 8in x 12in
• Watercolors block or tube
• 3 water color brushes of various sizes
• Masking tape – narrow (1/4in width) and wide (1in width)
• A board at least as big as your paper
• Paper towels or clean rags

SUPPLY LIST  Still Life in Collage & Mixed Media

• Your Supplies from Drawing & Watercolor
• SCISSORS
• Glue stick

There will be supplement materials supplied by the teacher.

**The Garden As Inspiration Series is a Project of the Wicker Park Garden Club and Advisory Council WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP with The Robey Chicago and The Chicago Park District.  Doug Wood and Maria Mariottini started the series in the summer of 2020 during the pandemic and offered drawing classes in Wicker Park – the park.  Since then, the class has explored watercolor, collage, and mixed media techniques.  The Wicker Park Gardens provided materials for these classes when it was appropriate and/or seasonal.
