Wicker Park Advisory Council Meeting Minutes

Wicker Park Advisory Council Meeting Minutes

Date: March 13, 2007

Present: Kelly Torres (Park Supervisor), Denise Browning, Doug Wood, Susan Fontana, Julie Dickinson, Richard Tilley, D. R. Edwards, Sylvia Ramos, Adam Housley, John Shirk, Josh Taylor

  1. Approval of February Minutes: Doug Wood moved to approve the minutes; Sylvia Ramos seconded. The minutes were approved by unanimous vote.
  2. Supervisor’s Report (Kelly Torres)
    1. Recreation Leader: The position still has not been filled. As per Art Richardson, Cynthia Rosario’s absence has resulted in some delays. Members of WPAC will continue to follow up / press on this.
    2. Cleaning: Ms. Fontana has pressed CPD regarding days of trash removal, but has received no response. Mr. Wood will follow up during his meetings downtown regarding “Park Grows” programs.
  3. Dog Park: Adam Housley — with great thanks from WPAC — has organized the Dog Park committee. The committee will be cleaning up the dog park shortly.
  4. Treasurer’s Report (Mr. Tilley): Mr. Tilley submitted a written report.
  5. Events (Ms. Fontana)
    1. Valentine’s Day Dance: This event went off quite well. Lisa was a very big help. Kelly Torres, Lisa, and Susan Fontana contributed most of the money for the dance. Ms. Fontana suggested that, next time, it might be better to have the dance
on another night other than Valentine’s Day itself.
    2. Sundays in the Park: The Park needs more staffing on Sundays for the Spring and Summer.
  6. Fountain (Mr. Wood): The brochure is ready to go.
  7. Garden Club (Mr. Wood): Park Kids Grow has started in 4 to 6 parks. There will be a plant sale in May as well as two socials.
  8. Bear Bog (Ms. Dickinson): The work is supposed to be completed this week. The dedication needs to be scheduled and the details worked out.
  9. Carnival (Ms. Dickinson and Ms. Ramos)
    1. The date of June 3, from 9-3, is confirmed.
    2. For the younger set (Ms. Dickinson): Tables, chairs, 2 tents, and a moonwalk are confirmed. There may be a climbing wall and a petting zoo (Wicker Park budget will fund this). Ms. Dickinson is still pursuing other businesses. There will be
music on stage from 10 a.m. to Noon.
    3. For the older set (Ms. Ramos): There will be a fashion show, arts & crafts, and school presentations.
    4. There will be tables for community groups with a suggested donation of $150.00.
  10. Renegade Craft Festival: Although invited, the organizers chose not to attend the WPAC meeting. Extensive discussion was had regarding the pros and cons of having this festival in the Park. It was the consensus of the WPAC that this festival has outgrown the Park and that the Park has still not recovered from damage done two years ago. WPAC resolved to detail and present its concerns to the CPD.

Meeting was adjourned by acclamation. Next meeting will be April 10, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Field House.
